Burbank Democratic Club

Thursday, June 26, 2008 - 7:00pm
Kevin Harrop home (backyard),
131 South Reese Street off Olive Avenue
Burbank, CA 91505

If you missed the tri-club picnic in May, here’s you chance for more good Democratic outdoor chow and outstanding ideas—this month’s Burbank Democratic Club meeting is a backyard barbecue and a “What’s on Your Mind?” session to gear up for the 2008 election. It’s all at the friendly home of our political action chair, Kevin Harrop.

As always, all Democrats are welcome, members or not. Aside from our recurring sound-off session, the club will also vote on a post-primary endorsement of Barack Obama for president as well as a death penalty resolution being circulated in California.

We’ll also take a specific look at what you can do on any level and time scale to get involved in electing Democrats this fall, locally and under the DP-SFV banner. For starters, we’ll be joining in on the Democrats’ booth at the annual Glendale Cruise Night downtown car show there July 19. But a lot more campaign events big and small are waiting, as we will hear Thursday.

See you July 26! Hopefully it won’t be as HOT as the picnic in May!

Here's a nonpartisan issue of interest to all—or is it? What's the status of water—from the state and regional level down to our city ration and conservation program in Burbank and other neighbor cities...and are any of them at loggerheads?

Joe Flores, Conservation Department manager with Burbank Water and Power, is the guest speaker who will get listeners up-to-date with the reality and the outlook of the water crisis at different levels of government, including our local ration plan and future in Burbank.

We'll also have two short, professional water-related video trailers that webmaster David Dobson worked on: a 6 minute video about Rainwater Harvesting, and a 10-minute award winning film (about the whistle blower who saved the Los Angeles River from losing its Clean Water Act protections.

Also: the club's upcoming fall fundraiser, looming local and DP-SFV campaign efforts, and a report from the recent state executive board session.

It's picnic time again in Burbank—so what are your "hot button" issues in this off-year election for California? All comers can vote with "hot button" stickers on our issues tote board for their top 3 state concerns for action. In fact, our picnic is not about rasing funds but raising community profile, do a good turn by a local charity, and offer locals a chance to meet local Democratic pols and candidates—and hear about the proposition issues, too. So, no admission: but we do "pass the hat" for donations.

Once again, it's a family event with games and a playground, so bring the kids! And as always: WE bring the meats and drinks—you bring the side dish, salad or desert. (Call VP Rosalie at 818-729-9463, or email rsalvato@sbcglobal.net, to help us coordinate the pot luck).

Having made the first procedural endorsement in a local primary in club history, the Burbank Dems will this month devote their meeting to helping out their choice. Feel free to come join in, too.

Thus, the Burbank Democratic club monthly meeting will be at Mike Gatto's election HQ for the 43rd AD special election. Of course, members and guests can help out at any time, as well.

Come find out how to fight identity theft AND enjoy a new/old member mixer mini-buffer to get excited for 2010! We'll be jumping into member input, club goals, the propositions, and state and local races—including our own 43rd Assembly seat, now vacant after Paul Krekorian's win on the LA City Council.

First, Deputy LA City Attorney Chris Garcia will talk about ID theft in the digital age and how to prevent it. Then it's wine and hors d'ouvres-plus and 2010 election plans, while members renew dues and sign up their friends and other new members—with a special low rate on new year's dues.

Garcia is running for a superior judge seat this year, but he is with us to specifically talk about the problem that he has tackled since his prior three-year term as Special Assistant US Attorney in Major Frauds, before his current title and job focus in ID Theft and Fraud.
