City and state: join the Burbank Democratic Club for a double scoop of issues for our May club meeting.

First, Burbank Council Member David Gordon visits and offers a city Q&A: State budget crisis impact? Local federal stimulus? Or just traffic lights, zoning, airport and speed bumps?

Then two of our club's three state convention delegates from AD 43 at the April state party convention-Pres. Janet Reynolds and webmaster David Dobson-offer a front-row recap of the politicking, parties and surprises up and down the line.... a real grass-roots weekend!

For this meeting, please bring canned or boxed food items to help a Burbank food pantry; the food banks continue to be under stress in this rough economy.

Call 818-288-2417 or browse: www.burbankdemocraticclub.com.

Shade trees, playground, great cook-out eats, plenty of seats—and even pets!—are in store for our club's fourth annual family picnic. Of course ALL the area's Democratic office-holders are invited to speak and Q&As—city, county, state and federal. We have confirmed so far state Sen. Carol Liu and City Council Member David Gordon; we hope to hear from Assembly Member Paul Krekorian, Cong. Adam Schiff and Brad Sherman, former city council/mayor Marsha Ramos, and others.

Tell your friends and family too: the Burbank Animal Shelter will also be there with pet adoptions available on-site. A bad economy also leads to a spike in abandoned pets and stressed budgets at the city shelter, so to help out please bring dry or canned pet food, cat litter, blankets or pet toys for our collection box.

Join us and our guests, Assistant Assembly Majority Leader Paul Krekorian of Burbank and Sen. Carol Liu, for an evening to share great food, good drink and learn the “ugly truth” about the May 19 state ballot budget initiatives – why you need to vote, and what you need to know.

Admission is free, but donations will be welcome. Please RSVP to the phone number or the BDC email, theclub@burbankdemocraticclub.com. If you have a favorite beverage or salad/dessert to share, bring it along!

We will also be collecting canned or dry food items or toiletries (soap, shampoo, etc.) for the Burbank Temporary Aid Center.

A "clean money" prop for public campaign financing is back on the June 2010 state primary ballot, so come join the the next Burbank Democratic Club meeting at 7-9 p.m. Thursday, March 29 at McCambridge Park Rec Center Room 2, 1515 Glenoaks Boulevard.

Robin Gilbert of the California Clean Money campaign will be talking about the California Fair Elections Act, and will be speaking ahead of the meeting right at 7:00. Afterward the club will consider a resolution in support of the act.
Plans will also be finalized for the club sponsorship of a community service project during this off-cycle election year.

Local focus and officer elections—but oh those state shenanigans!

Aside from thoughts from Sacramento to D.C., we'll have a discussion of the Burbank City Council and School results of March 24 and a second endorsement in any run-off, if needed. Most of all, we'll take ideas and make plans for a community service project for 2009 in Burbank.

And yes, we'll have annual officer elections—so those not a BDC "member in good standing" can renew your 2009 membership at the website or meeting (or--join for the first time!). If cost is preventing you from joining, please pay half; if that is too much, please speak to any of the officers and we can work something out. We'd rather have you as a member than fill our bank account—though we do need to do that too so we carry out our planned events for 2009.

Come prepared to share ideas. Our local focus is not ignoring the fact that the 2010 state and midterm elections are just around the corner!
